ACDC supports client efforts to become self-sufficient and productive members of the community. Understanding that employment is vital to this goal we assist clients with preparing for, locating and keeping a job. We help them to develop the skills and attitude that are key to succeeding in the American workplace. We also help clients access training programs in an effort to increase employment opportunities. In addition, we assist employers in locating and hiring individuals who are skilled, hard working and creative. We have developed successful relationships with employers who recognize that refugees have developed qualities essential to business success: determination, focus and toughness of spirit and a-can-do-attitude. Our employer services include pre-employment training workshops, job intake, referral, placement and follow-up of applicants. - Cultural Preservation and Adjustment Services:
The goal of ACDC is not only to help refugees and immigrants be part of mainstream America, but also to preserve the language and culture of each ethnic group. To facilitate that process, ACDC encourages each group to offer classes to teach children their native language and culture (through songs and dance). Also, adjusting to a new home land can be very stressful. The African Community Center helps the refugees overcome culture shock through cultural adjustment workshops as well as by matching the clients with their first American friends. - SERVICES FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME:
In coordination with the Connecticut Coalition of Mutual Assistant Association (CCMAA) and in conjunction with Connecticut State Office of Victim Services (OVS), ACDC provides services for victims of crime. Our message to our community is: If you are a victim of a crime (or know somebody who is), we can provide you with culturally and linguistically sensitive advocacy and support services free of charge. Our bi-lingual and bi-cultural advocates can: Assist with crisis intervention Refer domestic violence victims to appropriate shelters and follow up Explain to victims their legal rights Explain the compensation program to victims and help them file a claim Provide translation services for victims during a legal proceeding
